Aretha Franklin — full name Aretha Louise Franklin — singer, songwriter and pianist, and forever known as the “Queen of Soul”. Rolling Stone named her the greatest singer of all time, and with global sales of more than 75 million records, she remains one of the world’s best-selling music artists.

I photographed Aretha for Arista Records at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1978/79. What a show. The moment she came on stage, everyone was on their feet.

There was no photographers’ pit for this concert, so getting a clear shot meant competing with the audience — trying to find a position, waiting for a gap, and grabbing the moment whenever it appeared. It’s easy to forget just how tricky it could be for photographers to get the shots at live shows like this.

But Aretha was fantastic, and somehow, I managed to get a few frames. Lucky me.

Please note that the paper size is always larger than the printed image. Info here.
