Bryan Ferry — Roxy Music Wembley Arena 1981.
Bryan Ferry — English singer, musician and songwriter, founder and frontman of Roxy Music, and one of the most distinctive figures to emerge from the glam and art-rock era.
Ferry’s unique vocal style and unmistakable sense of style helped make Roxy Music one of the most influential British bands of the 1970s. He also built a hugely successful solo career alongside the band, with three UK number-one albums and ten singles reaching the UK Top 10. Across his career, he has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.
Bryan Ferry and fashion designer Antony Price formed one of the great partnerships of the era, helping create that immaculate, sophisticated look that became such a big part of Ferry’s image. The man could certainly wear a suit!
With Roxy Music, the music was always only part of the story. The clothes, the lighting, the attitude, the whole visual presentation.
Roxy Music were playing three nights at Wembley Arena, and this set of photographs was taken at one of them. Can’t remember which one!
Photographing a band like Roxy Music was a very different experience from pointing a camera at a straightforward rock gig. You weren’t just looking for the obvious rock ‘n’ roll moments. You were looking for the atmosphere, the gesture, the lighting and those brief moments when everything came together in the viewfinder.
Ferry had that extraordinary ability to look completely in control while doing very little. A tilt of the head, a particular expression or simply the way he stood under the lights could make a frame.
