Blondie — Debbie Harry
Founded by singer Deborah Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, Blondie broke up after the release of their sixth studio album, The Hunter.
Thankfully, they eventually saw sense and reformed in 1997, going on to enjoy renewed success — including a UK number one with Maria in 1999. They continued touring around the world and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Blondie have sold around 40 million records worldwide and, amazingly, are still going strong.
I worked with Blondie and Debbie Harry a few times over the years — gigs, photocalls and, on one memorable occasion, a session with just me and them.
This particular photograph was taken at a photocall in some hotel in London to promote Hanging On The Telephone.
I’ve never been a huge fan of photocalls. You’d have a small army of photographers all fighting for the their shot, while the artist was expected to smile or at least look at you all at some point.
And you didn’t get long.
On this occasion, though, I struck lucky. I managed to get Debbie looking moodily straight into my camera. Which, to be fair, isn’t difficult when you’re Debbie Harry she looked great mooody or smiling.
Debbie was, made for the camera.
The film was exposed at 1000 ASA, which gives the photograph that lovely grainy, slightly moody quality.
I always loved working this way. You had to make the light work for you and get the shot in the camera.
Just a roll of film or more and a trip to the darkroom for Black and White or in this case sending it off to the colour.
Looking back, I think that’s partly why I loved it. You had to trust your eye, react quickly and occasionally get a little bit lucky
