Blondie Debbie Harry “Hanging on the Telephone” London 1978.
Open Ended.
I worked with Blondie and Debbie Harry a few times over the years, covering gigs, photocalls and even a session with just me and them.
This photograph was taken at a photocall for Hanging On The Telephone, in a hotel somewhere in London, close to Manchester Square and not far from Chrysalis Records. Jack Lee from the Nerves ( his band ) was there with Debbie as he penned the song. Although we all got a photograph of them both together which was the point of the Photo Call, we were all there really to get a shot of Debbie, which we did after much persuasion.
I was never a fan of photocalls. Too many photographers with sharp elbows all jostling for position all shouting over here Debbie.
On this occasion, though. I managed to catch Debbie looking straight down my lens a few times, giving me exactly the moment I was hoping for. Which in real time I only had about 5 to 10 minutes which felt like 30 seconds!
I shot it using available light, which I always preferred when I could. Always looked gritty and gave you atmosphere of the room and the person in front of the camera which of course was Debbie Harry. Well, she was made for the camera. Effortlessly photogenic.
This was back in the days of real film, exposed at 1000 ASA. That’s where the grain and that slightly dark, moody atmosphere come from. It was part of the look, part of the character of the photograph.
