R.E.M. formed in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who met at the University of Georgia. One of the first alternative rock bands. The band broke up amicably in 2011 with members devoting time to solo projects after having sold more than 90 million albums worldwide and becoming one of the worlds best selling acts.
Shot this image of the band at 136 New Kings Road home of A&M Records back in 1981 when thy signed to I.R.S. releases were distributed by A&M until 1985.
