Tricky: A3/A4 Open Ended Prints. Unmounted

Born Adrian Thaws in Bristol, in 1964, Tricky initially made a name for himself as a rap artist on Massive Attack’s first two albums during the early ’90s, while hooking up with teenage vocalist Martina Topley-Bird, who became his girlfriend and musical collaborator on his own solo projects.

As a producer and a musician, he is noted for a dark, rich and layered sound and a whispering sprechgesang lyrical style. Culturally, Tricky blends different styles, particularly in his musical fusion of rock and hip hop, high art and pop culture. His debut album Maxinquaye was nominated for the Mercury Prize and voted Album of the Year by NME Magazine.

This Image was shot for Select Magazine. The Record company & Tricky liked the image and asked if they could use it for Black Steel Cover 1995. They used a Polagraph black & white 400 instant film version. We then got Martina back in my studio to photograph her the same way. Make Up by Alison Butler.
