Van Halen The band formed in Pasadena, California in 1972. Van Halen was known for their energetic live performances and the virtuosity of their guitarist, Eddie Van Halen
Van Halen consisted of guitarist, keyboardist, backing vocalist and primary songwriter Eddie Van Halen, his older brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, vocalis David Lee Roth, and bassist Michael Anthony. Their Albums Van Halen, Van Halen 11, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, and Diver Down. The had sold over 10 million copies in the US.

This was a pretty special one. It was Van Halen’s first headline concert in the UK. Most of their European dates that autumn were supporting Black Sabbath, but they had this one standalone headline show at the Rainbow.
And what a band they were.
Eddie Van Halen — what a guitarist. Watching him play was something else. And then there was David Lee Roth. Boy, could that man jump!
The photographers’ setup at the Rainbow was very similar to Hammersmith Odeon, although for me it was even more awkward to get to. There was always a bit of a scramble getting yourself into position, and once you were there, you had to make the most of it.
My mate Paul Canty and I worked together on this one. Paul covered the left side of the stage and I covered the right. Between us, we could pretty much cover everything that was going on.
We did this as the three song rule became popular with big bands and artists. Not on this occasion though.
Paul and I did loads of gigs together — Bowie, Thin Lizzy, The Kinks and loads more.
It was a great way of working. We knew where the other would be, stayed out of each other’s way and between us we could come away with a pretty comprehensive record of the night.
And on one of these photographs, you can actually see Paul looking in my direction.
Time for a pint, I’m sure, was going through his head!
