Hazel O’Connor 1981 — a few memories from behind the camera.
Hazel made a real impact in the 1980s, starring in the film Breaking Glass and scoring a string of hit singles, including Eighth Day, D-Days and Will You. Sons and Lovers was another great album.
Hazel was much more than a singer and actress. In 1998, she took her life story on the road in Beyond Breaking Glass, a touring show with harpist Cormac de Barra. It was a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and went on to tour Ireland and the UK, the Netherlands (twice), Australia and Canada.
I was lucky enough to work with Hazel a few times over the years — in Chelsea, in Edinburgh and near her home. Each session was a little different, and it was always a pleasure to photograph her.
This particular shot was taken on the roof, by the door, at my Chelsea Studio 1981. Sometimes you don’t need an elaborate set or a fancy location; you just spot something that works at the time.
Hazel was absolutely great to work with. So much fun, full of character and a real pleasure to have in front of the camera.
Looking back through the archive brings back some lovely memories. This is one of them.
